Election day is almost exactly two months away and the closer we get to a new governor moving to Richmond the more attack ads litter the airwaves.
WSLS 10 will continue our Truth Tracker series from now until election day checking the facts of the political ads you see the most.
One of the recent ads released by Republican Ken Cuccinelli's campaign is titled "Facts".
The ad begins with an attack against Cuccinelli's opponent, Democrat Terry McAuliffe.
"There is only one candidate under investigation. Terry McAuliffe," says the ad's narrator.
This claim is misleading.
McAuliffe's former company GreenTech is being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for allegedly guaranteeing returns for its investors.
While McAuliffe is the company's co-founder, he is not personally under investigation.
"And the press calls McAuliffe's attacks false," the narrator says.
This blanket statement is only true if you focus on the specific article on the screen.
This references the first debate between the two candidates after Cuccinelli was investigated and eventually cleared of breaking any laws over gifts he received from the company Star Scientific while serving as attorney general.
McAuliffe said the investigation found that Cuccinelli "should have been prosecuted", a claim PolitiFact Virginia ruled as "pants on fire".
However, PolitiFact has found plenty of statements by both candidates to be false.
"Cuccinelli personally launched the investigation into Bob McDonnell and called for immediate reform to strengthen ethics laws," the announcer says.
These claims are true.
While the Washington Post broke the story on the investigation into Governor Bob McDonnell in the spring, Cuccinelli ordered the initial investigation in November 2012.
Cuccinelli did also call for a special ethics session in August.
However, it's important to remember that the ethics of both candidates has been called into question during the campaign.
Wednesday, we'll check the facts of a recent ad released by McAuliffe's campaign.
