Fact Check: McAuliffe ad attacks Cuccinelli's ethics

Posted: Updated:

A key topic so far in the campaign to become Virginia's next governor is the ethics of Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Ken Cuccinelli.

Recently, McAuliffe released an ad focusing on Cuccinelli's decision not to return gifts given to him by Star Scientific CEO Johnny Williams.

"As Governor Bob McDonnell returns thousands of dollars worth of gifts to campaign donor Jonnie Williams, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli says he's not giving anything back."

This ad contains only cut-up news clips, including this quote from WSLS 10's Lindsey Ward.

We've received several calls from viewers, asking why WSLS 10 is part of a political ad.

It's important to remember that as a station we have no control over what clips or segments political candidates use in their ads since they can be taken over the air.

Despite what is used, WSLS 10 is in no way endorsing one candidate or the other.

As for this ad, the quote is true; However, there is more to this story that is not included in the ad.

"Cuccinelli received more than $18,000 worth of gifts," another news clip said.

This is also true, as is this...

"They include a $1,500 catered Thanksgiving dinner, private jet trips, and vacation lodges," another clip said.

While these news clips are all true, the ad fails to mention that Cuccinelli was cleared of any wrongdoing in the case.

This likely isn't the last ad we'll see from either candidate that focuses on ethics.
