Court records: home where dead infant found "filthy"

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, VA -

When Rockbridge County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the house where an unresponsive infant was found over the weekend, they say the conditions inside were "filthy".

Just before 11:45am Saturday, 911 dispatch received a call from a home on Rosemary Lane, just outside of Lexington, that a 7-month-old baby was not breathing.  Officials say the mother of the baby was outside trying to give it CPR when first responders pulled up.

The infant was transported to Stonewall Jackson Hospital where it was pronounced dead.  The name and gender of the baby are not being released at this time.

In a search warrant affidavit obtained by WSLS 10, deputies describe the home as "filthy", with walls and floors covered in trash and feces, and roaches and fleas crawling everywhere.  They say there were other children inside who were partially undressed.  One of them was covered in feces.

Investigators took two baby bottles, a bassinet, an apple juice container, a baby food can, and a baby diaper out of the home when they executed the search warrant.

The Rockbridge County Sheriff's Office says the Medical Examiner's Office in Roanoke performed an autopsy on the baby -- though no official cause of death has been released.  Officials said in a press release that deputies did not observe any visible signs of trauma to the infant.

No arrests have been made and no charges have been filed in connection to the case, which remains under investigation.
