Community reacts to Radford Grede facility closing

Posted: Updated:

"Thank you for all of your hard work," that's what the sign employees read everyday as they walk into Grede. Wednesday as they were leaving, they learned their days working at the Radford facility were numbered.

It's sudden and it's going to change this town. It's definitely going to," former contracted employee Joshua Horvat said.

He say's it's a major employer for the city of Radford and news of the plant closing has the community worried.

"I wouldn't want it to happen. But I think it's going to be different around here," Horvat said.

Richard Pacini, spokesperson for the Michigan based company says closing the plant down was a business decision.

"Primarily because of a lack of a competitive cost structure and the after affects from a fire that took place back in May 2012," Pacini said.

Several Grede employees spoke to WSLS off camera. They all consistently said the news of Grede shutting it's doors down comes as no surprise. They do say that it leaves things for them up in the air. Grede is one of the largest employers in Radford.

Salaried employees are eligible to apply for job openings at other Grede locations, but the closest one of Radford is hours away in North Carolina.

Employees will be given severance pay. Their last day of work is sadly during the holidays in December.
