Franklin Street business owners say no to concealed weapons

Posted: Updated:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

One of most of hotly contested bills Gov. Pat McCrory signed was a gun bill that allows concealed carry permit holders to bring in their weapons to bars and restaurants that serve alcohol.

But business owners in Chapel Hill are pushing back.

Under the new law, if a business owner doesn't want concealed carry permit holders to bring in their weapons, owners can display stickers or signs that read, "No Concealed Weapons."

The Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership handed out free stickers to any businesses that don't want weapons in their restaurants and bars.

Organizers said about 65 stickers were distributed. The partnership said more stickers may be made due to demand.

Many bars and restaurants on Franklin Street have put the stickers on front of their windows because they're concerned about the mixing of alcohol and weapons.

"If you have a weapon inside the restaurant, the people who are having a date night over here, they would not feel happy. When I found out I said, ‘no that's not right' because alcohol, guns, that's not right," said Subash Panneerselvem, chef manager of Cholanad.

The new gun law takes effect Oct. 1.
