WWII veterans share memories in Roanoke

ROANOKE, VA -

Josh Kessler is one of six WWII veterans who met at the South Roanoke Library this morning, to speak with the community and share memories of their time serving the U.S.

"For the community it is something unique to hear stories they've never heard," says the library's adult services coordinator, Darlene Smithwick. "We learn history in school, but to learn first hand history and the experiences these men have is just an honor."

Many of the stories shared today were just that. Not depictions of individual battles, but the history that left a mark on the memories of these men.

"They also bring souvenirs that they have," says Smithwick. "So you can see a flag that flew at Iwo Jima is here today."

Library organizers say they hope similar events can be planned in the future.
