Local 9/11 memorial events taking place today

Posted: Updated:

There are several events taking place locally in remembrance of the 9/11 attacks.

-The Marion Volunteer Fire Department will dedicate a memorial this morning that includes a piece of salvaged steel from the World Trade Center. Two years ago, the department went to New York City to get the 4000-pound section of steel. It will have a permanent home alongside markers commemorating the attack and the lives of local firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty.

-Today is a day of remembrance, but it's also developed into a day of service for a Roanoke organization. Volunteers with Rebuilding Together Roanoke will be repairing the home of a veteran who was cited for housing code violations but is unable to make the repairs on his own. About 20 volunteers are expected to take part.

-A local man is carrying on a firefighter tradition to honor the fallen. On September 11, 2001, the highest level firefighters in New York were able to reach was the 110th floor of the World Trade Center -- in their full gear with heavy equipment. Nate Camfiord tells us he'll be climbing the Wells Fargo Tower stairwell this morning in honor of those firefighters who lost their lives. The building has just 21 floors, so he says he'll climb the stairs five times, plus an additional five floors to reach 110. He'll begin the climb at 7:30 this morning.

-A group of thirty local bikers are headed to Washington, D.C. this morning.  They'll join two million bikers headed to the capital to show their support for those who lost their lives on September 11th. This ride came together over the last few weeks, when it was announced that the American Muslim Political Action Committee would be hosting a rally in D.C. today. Road Captain Brian Robinson says the ride is simply meant to honor and remember -- and when the bikers enter D.C., everything will be peaceful. The local group will meet another group in Springfield before journeying on to D.C.
