A nation remembers: national 9/11 events happening today

Posted: Updated:

Here's a rundown of what's taking place nationwide to commemorate those who lost their live on September 11th, twelve years ago today.

In New York City, families will gather at the National Memorial at Ground Zero, now a symbol of where the World Trade Center towers once stood. They will read the names of the 2,983 people who lost their lives when two planes crashed into the towers. The ceremony will begin at 8:46 a.m. with a moment of silence.

Near the Capitol, the Pentagon will have a morning ceremony for victims' relatives and survivors of the attacks. There will be a wreath-laying and remarks from defense secretary Chuck Hagel. President Obama will attend.

The President will also mark the anniversary in a separate ceremony, along with the First Lady, Vice President Joe Biden, and Dr. Biden. They will observe a moment of silence on the South Lawn of the White House.

And in Shanksville, Pennsylvania -- bells will ring out in honor of those victims who died onboard United Airlines Flight 93. The flight was overtaken by terrorists and crashed into an open field. Everyone on board that flight was killed, but not before some courageous passengers fought to stop it from reaching the capitol.
