Smart Beginnings NRV looking for volunteers for 'Reading Hour'

Posted: Updated:

If you're spending the morning reading to your child before breakfast, a New River Valley group is looking for someone just like you.

Smart Beginnings NRV is looking for volunteers to take part in a pilot program called Reading Hour. The organization works to make sure children get the best start by focusing on early childhood development and school readiness. Reading to a child is a key component in that.

The organization, Reading is Fundamental found twenty six percent of children who were read to three or four times a week by a family member recognized all letters of the alphabet compared to fourteen percent who were read to less frequently. "Reading out loud to kids is one of the most important things you can do to develop a really strong foundation for kindergarten readiness-- just a love of reading, literacy skills-- all those things that help kids succeed in school and even beyond that," said Katlyn Baker with Smart Beginnings NRV.

Smart Beginnings NRV is partnering with child care centers in the area to start reading hour next month. Volunteers who can spend 20 to 30 minutes at a time reading one on one to 4-year-olds at local day care centers are needed. To apply, e-mail sbnrvreadinghour@gmail.com or call Katlyn Baker at 540-290-5456.
