Electric Car finds home at Roanoke Fire-EMS

DOWNTOWN ROANOKE -

Roanoke Fire-EMS is going green and saving the city green with the newest addition to its fleet.

Fire inspectors who check buildings in Downtown Roanoke are now getting around in an all-electric vehicle.

The city bought the car several years ago as part of its green initiative -- but because it can only go 25 miles per hour and has a 35 mile range, it ultimately couldn't find a great use for it.

Deputy Chief Billy Altman says the vehicle's limitations aren't a problem when it's used in Downtown Roanoke, and it fit the department's needs, which is why they took it.

"We're short cars and we have a lot of inspectors working," said Altman.  "Right now, it's going to serve our needs pretty good and it improves our carbon footprint."
