The USS Mahan returns home today. It's been on an 8.5 month deployment performing ballistic missile defense near Europe and responding to the crisis in Syria. It was one of the first destroyers stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean as the US began talks of launching a military strike against Syria. Four other destroyers from Norfolk are still there. The navy will webcast the ship's homecoming ceremony.
Astronaut Alexander Gerst took a photo of the fighting in the Middle East from the International Space Station, calling it his "saddest photo" yet.
