Animal hoarding case overfills Giles animal shelter

Posted: Updated:
PEARISBURG, VA -

The Giles County animal shelter is filled with felines after police rescued 26 cats. The shelter is now well past their capacity.

These cats came from an animal hoarding case in Pearisburg. Animal control officer Jeff Spicer says they were originally called to the home to check on the welfare of a dog, but when they arrived they found the situation was much more.

"There were cats everywhere," Spicer said.

Spicer says this is the second animal hoarding case from that owner. He says last time the County took 18 cats from the home in October. He describes the home as unacceptable living conditions.

"It was what you would expect with 26 cats living in three rooms of a house," Spicer said.

Spicer says the condition of the home was so bad that the house had to be condemned. WSLS spoke with the owner off camera. She was very upset and concerned over the well being of the animals. She said she had good intentions for the cats and was actually rescuing them from abandonment. She was temporarily fostering them and actively looking for homes, but was unsuccessful.

She even put flyers up around the County.

Now the shelter is overwhelmed. Spicer says the cats more than doubled the shelters capacity.

"It left us scrambling," Spicer said.

Most of the cats are in good condition. Several had to be treated for ear or respiratory infections but all are adoptable.

Angels of Assisi in Roanoke has agreed to give any of the cats who are adopted or fostered free veterinary care for any health issues.

All cats have been spayed or neutered.

Now all the little feline faces need is a place to call home.

The animals must find homes or foster care immediately.

Spicer says the shelter is in great need of monetary donations or donations of dog and cat food or cat litter.

To adopt one of these animals or to provide assistance or donations please call the shelter or the Giles County Sheriff's Department at 540-921-0031.
