Roanoke City Councilman to host domestic violence event

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE, VA -

Roanoke City Councilman Sherman Lea will host a domestic violence forum tonight.

The event will educate the community on the local resources available to domestic violence victims.

It will be a family focused event. However, Councilman Lea says that anyone can benefit by attending.

According to the Roanoke City Police Department, it's responded to over 900 domestic violence incidents since the beginning of the year. About 70% of the victims were female and 30% were male. A little over 5% of the victims were children.

Many domestic violence incidents go unreported every year. Councilman Lea refers to domestic violence as a "hidden crime" saying, "We want to put a light on it. We want to make people aware that you don't have to stay cuddled up or stay back or stay down and deal with this. There are ways and there are programs that can help you."

The event is open to the public. It will be held at the Roanoke Civic Center from 6-8pm.

There is no admission and child care will be available at the event.
