HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. -

The Department of Transportation sent fliers to 52,000 homes looking for input on a proposed plan to finish the I-540 loop.

However the plan in question involves a route that Holly Springs residents thought was off the table.

The so-called purple route runs through Holly Springs, particularly along the Talicud Trail on the Apex-Holly Springs line. If built, more than a dozen homes along the route would be taken out, and many more adjacent neighbors would have a highway running very close to them.

Neighbors are outraged because they were previously told the route was off the table.

"Myself and other neighbors moved into this area because 540 wasn't going to be here," said Marna Swagert, whose home is one of those that would be affected by the highway. "We planned our lives around knowing where that route was going to be and avoiding it."

Anne Burge worries that the value of her home will plummet if I-540 goes through her backyard as the purple route proposes.

"I'm not sure if I could sell it or be upside down by hundreds of thousands of dollars," Burge said. "It's very scary."

Neither the purple route nor any of the others have been approved yet.

NCDOT plans to hold a series of public hearing on them in the middle of October.
