Greek Festival to help four local charities

Posted: Updated:

Roanoke's annual Greek Festival kicks off today.

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church hosts the three day event every year. Festival organizer, Peter Simopoulus, estimates close to 30,000 people will come out for Greek food, music, and dancing this weekend.

The church donates part of the proceeds to local organizations each year.

This year, the church selected: Center in the Square, the Rescue Mission, Mental Health America of Roanoke Valley, and the Alzheimer's Association.

To help raise more money for local charities, the church will offer a new dessert that combines vanilla ice cream and baklava. Volunteers made close to 50% more baklava then they have in years past to make sure it will last through the weekend.

If you don't have time to stop in and eat, the festival's drive thru on Williamson Road can provide a quick meal.

Any leftover food from the event is donated to the Rescue Mission.
