Virginia Tech warns of server breach

Posted: Updated:
BLACKSBURG, VA -

Virginia Tech on Tuesday morning, alerted the campus community to a server breach.

The university stated the breach involved the illegal accessing of a server in the Department of Human Resources on August 28th, 2013.

An analysis found the breach involved the records of 144,963 people who applied for university jobs online between 2003 and 2013.  Of that number, Tech says 16,642 people provided their driver's license numbers on their job application.

The university says it has contacted all of those people to alert them to the potential identity theft.

Tech claims the rest of the more than 128,000 applications did not contain information such as Social Security numbers, or other private personal information that could be used by identity thieves.  The university stated:

"For the remaining 128,321 applicants, the only items that may have been exposed are standard employment applicant information. Faculty applicants are asked to provide minimal information on the online application, so no employment or education history was on the server. For staff applicants, employment and education history was on the server. Applicants typically attach documents (resumes, for example) to their online application. No attached documents for any of the 144,963 individuals were on the server."

Tech leaders say they regret the breach, and are taking steps to prevent the situation from happening again.
