FAYETTE COUNTY, TN (CBS) -

A skydiver who disappeared during a jump Monday considered even higher risk than regular skydiving was found dead later in the day in southwestern Tennessee, reports CBS Memphis affiliate WREG-TV.

The man, 56-year-old Randall Mathews of Perris, Calif., jumped from a plane at about noon with six others, the station says.

Just before sunset, a search team in a helicopter spotted him and sent in a ground crew, whose members found his body in a remote wooded area near Whiteville.

He was still wearing his oxygen mask, WREG says, and it appears the parachute came out of the backpack but didn't fully deploy. It wasn't immediately clear whether the parachute started to deploy but had a problem during the descent,or if it came out on impact with the ground.

Investigators haven't ruled out a medical issue, WREG notes, adding that an autopsy will determine the cause of death.

Mathews was taking part in a high altitude - low opening, or HALO jump, from about 30,000 feet.
