NBC Fall Preview: The Blacklist

Posted: Updated:

All this week, I'll be unveiling my take on NBC's new fall lineup.

We start with "The Blacklist" starring TV veteran James Spader.

Let me tell you, it's the hit NBC has been looking for.

Spader's typical wit is on full display here, in what's likely to be an Emmy-nominated performance each year.

He plays ex-government agent Raymond Reddington -- known as "Red."

And he turns himself in to FBI headquarters at the start of the show, offering up classified intel on international terrorists.

The show is fast-paced, intelligent and while the territory isn't new here (it reminded me of a tamer version of "Silence of the Lambs"), Spader, the supporting cast, and the writers execute the premise so well, you won't be bothered by it.

Relative newcomer, Megan Boone, who plays Agent Elizabeth Keen on the show, also shines here and has terrific chemistry with Spader.

It's been awhile since NBC unveiled a drama with such promise and long-range potential. I've seen a number of pilots from the different networks (ABC, FOX, CBS) and I think it's safe to say this is the best new drama of the fall, and it's better than most long-standing dramas as well.

The future is bright, and while I don't want to place too much of my excitement on the pilot, all the necessary pieces are in place for an award-winning hit. Hopefully, with "The Blacklist" and "Hannibal", the innovation continues at NBC for seasons to come.
