Hokies Need to Overcome Difficult Circumstances in Atlanta

Posted: Updated:

Marshall's visit to Lane Stadium left a mark or two. The Thundering Herd and the Hokies played for three minutes short of four hours.  The triple overtime game earned Virginia Tech their third win. And Logan Thomas probably earned triple the treatments in the days to come. Logan admits he was sore after having 23 carries in a triple overtime win.

The Hokies physical challenges of taking on Georgia Tech on Thursday are obvious.  The mental ones may be even more imposing. The Hokies are facing an offense they only see once a year in the triple option. The Hokies defensive tackle Derrick Hopkins says it is unusual but Virginia Tech has worked on Georgia Tech the past couple of Sundays to avoid a cram session.

The 3-0 Yellow jackets of Coach Paul Johnson have the 4th ranked rushing offense in the country.  Johnson has been running the triple option "flexbone" since his Georgia Southern days in the mid-90's. From there he turned Navy into a threat with the same offense before moving to Georgia Tech.  Coach Beamer explains that Johnson runs his option right on the line of scrimmage as opposed to what a lot of people do now--the read option, which pro's like RG III run.  Defensive back Kyle Fuller says the Hokies defense needs to be disciplined, tough and physical in order to succeed in Atlanta. Kickoff 7:30 Thursday night in Atlanta.
