CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -

Illinois and North Carolina have some basketball history but the schools will face each other in a home-and-home football series in 2015 and 2016.

The teams will play in North Carolina on Sept. 19, 2015, and in Champaign on Sept. 10, 2016.

North Carolina won both previous meetings. The last was in 1987.

The Tar Heels beat the Illini in the national basketball championship in 2005.

Illinois also said Thursday it has added home games against Murray State and Western Michigan in 2016 and Ball State in 2017.

Previously announced 2015 home games against Kent State and Western Illinois will be moved to Sept. 5 and Sept. 12 to accommodate North Carolina's addition.

North Carolina said it also has added home games in 2014 against San Diego State and Liberty.
