Special Botetourt Senior Shines

Posted: Updated:

Every town has a team, every team has players, and every player has a story. But one player on Lord Botetourt's varsity football team has a unique one..and one we can all learn from. Josh Leonard is a wide receiver for the Cavaliers and he outworks more than his competition.. Josh laces up his cleats, straps on his helmet, and puts on his trademark gloves--and beats a disability.

Josh does everything everyone else does at practice--like running routes. Coach Jamie Harless explains that the Cavaliers are not an exclusive club--anyone who wants to play football and is willing to put in the work can be a member of the team. He reminds us that there might be plenty of people in the stands that could do more than Josh, but they are choosing not to.

Josh also found a special home amongst his peers. The 5-7, 130 pound senior has a habit of picking the team up when they are down, or have had a particularly tough practice. Star running back Chris Thompson says that Josh brings a lot to the team. He says he reminds everyone that they should be thankful for the talents that were given to them.

This past Friday night against Richlands, Josh's number 89 was called..and he got to play in his first game of the season.  The crowd, and his teammates loved it. He makes the team and all who have the honor to come in contact with him better too. He reminds all of us it's not where you come from, it's where you go. Coach Harless called says it's courage--and it defines itself when you see it occur.
