Posted: Updated:

Open enrollment begins today.

Before you log on to the marketplace, here are the facts you need to know.

  • If you don't have insurance through your employer or another source, such as Medicaid or Medicare, you are required to purchase health insurance by 2014.
  • The Affordable Care Act goes into effect on January 1st, 2014. However, there is a grace period so you have until the end of March to enroll.
  • If you want coverage to begin on January 1st, you must buy insurance by December 15th.
  • There are different plans available on the marketplace with different premiums and out of pocket costs.
  • It does not matter if you are unemployed because your annual household income determines if you are exempt from purchasing healthcare.
  • Individuals making below $45,960 will qualify for financial help. Families of four with an annual incomes below $94,200 also qualify for help. You will be able to see what you qualify for after you fill out your personal information on the exchange.
  • If you do not purchase insurance, the penalty for the first year will be $95 per adult and $47.50 for children. Penalties will increase over time.

Before you log on, make sure you have the right documentation. Have your social security number, as well as any employer and income information on hand.

If you need help locally, there are a few different resources available. Both will provide help free of charge.

  • Patrick Kelly is our region's navigator. He can assist anyone with using the site. He can also help with selecting a plan that best fits your needs. To schedule an appointment, call 540-345-1839.
