Vinton eyes new park as part of downtown facelift

Posted: Updated:
VINTON, VA -

Between a multi-million dollar library project and a $700,000 downtown revitalization plan that includes facade and streetscaping improvements, as well as an upgrade to the Vinton Farmer's Market, a lot is getting ready to happen in Downtown Vinton.  And town leaders aren't ready to stop there.

"A park is an amenity that the town doesn't currently have in the downtown area," said Ryan Spitzer, Assistant to the Town Manager for the Town of Vinton.  "And Council thought it would be good to look at that for our young people."

Specifically, they asked town staff to find opportunities for a small park near the Municipal Building and new library.  Town staff has now come back to them with the following list of options:

-Option 1: Build a skate park in an area behind the Municipal Building, where a group of teens has created a makeshift skate park on large concrete slabs there.

-Option 2: Build a playground on an empty field next to the Municipal Building and across the street from the new library location.

-Option 3: Open a pocket park with seating on an empty field next to the Municipal Building and across the street from the Carilion Clinic facility there.

-Options 4 & 5: Purchase property from a church near the Municipal Building and transform it into a multi-recreational area with picnic space, a playground, and an older kid space.

Council members will discuss those options during their meeting Tuesday night at 7:00pm.

Leaders say any kind of park space would enhance the downtown area and give people one more reason to visit.

"We're very excited to see the downtown area really be revitalized and be a welcoming place for everybody," said Spitzer.

The downtown business community says that's just what they're banking on.

"[Downtown Vinton] is a great place," said Angie Chewning, Executive Director of the Vinton Area Chamber of Commerce.  "But I think with the revitalization, it's going to bring new life to it.  It's going to bring new people down.  So we're excited about it."

Spitzer says council members are not limited to one park option and if they choose, they could move forward with multiple parks.
