MARTINSVILLE, Va. (August 26, 2014) – Some of Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s biggest wins have come on NASCAR's largest tracks. But it is the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series' shortest track … Martinsville Speedway … that is a sentimental favorite for Earnhardt.Part of that sentiment stems from Earnhardt's love for the roots of racing, and no track has deeper roots in NASCAR than Martinsville Speedway.        A year ago freshman sensation Marshall Wood put his best foot forward for the Hokies. That effort included a 13 point-8 rebound effort against Appalachian State in November.  Then the Rustburg product had that foot fail him.  A fracture in mid-December cost him seven games. Wood explains that the injury occurred just when he started to hit his stride, and he's anxious to get back on the floor with his teammates and start competing again.

With a 14 point-16 rebound effort at NC State in February his talent is obvious.  But at 6'8" in the ACC, power is essential.  And this offseason he added some.  Coach James Johnson explains that Wood was asked to add more weight and strength and Wood responded with extra muscle. He says he was asked to work on adding more to his game including putting the ball on the floor more and being a bigger threat inside--and he did that as well. Now he's anxious to see how those improvements translate to game action.

The sophomore will no doubt be called upon to score more as Virginia Tech looks to replace the nation's leading scorer in Erick Green. Wood looks to take another step without a setback to those all important feet. Marshall explains that often times the offense got stagnant standing around and watching Green operate, but now the team must be more balanced and dangerous from all points on the floor.
