A sculptor named Jason DeCaires Taylor is populating the coral reefs off the coast of Mexico with human sculptures. Not only is it underwater art, but the figures will create their own reef, and as underwater life -- including corals encrust the sculptures, the art will appear to be alive.
Another bonus is that the work will draw vacationing divers away from the main reef, giving it a rest from all the underwater traffic.
Here's the Roanoke connection. That sculptor -- Jason DeCaires Taylor is coming later this month to speak by invitation of Center in the Square.
He will be appear at a reception among the aquariums at Center in the Square at 6:30 followed by a presentation at the Taubman Museum of Art at 8 p.m. on October 17. Admission is free, but limited to the first 150 people. Tickets are available at the McDonald's Box office at Center in the Square, or by calling (540) 224-1200.
