ROANOKE COUNTY -

The 27th annual Roanoke small business awards gets underway Thursday night at 6 p.m.

It's hosted by the Roanoke Chamber of Commerce and a number of local business owners will be honored.

And, it's been a good year for business in Roanoke.

Trends show that our local economy is slowly starting to pick up after the recession. 2013  has been a good year for small businesses in our area.

Experts tell us there was more capitol available this year than in recent years, making it easier for businesses to start or grow, and we definitely have seen a lot of new startups in 2013.

Between March 2012 and March of this year, there were seventy one new startup firms in Roanoke County.

There is a potential for this upcoming year to be just as successful.

WSLS spoke with Kristi Sutherland with the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce about what it means to win one of these awards.

"So it's the community working together to recognize these people who have put their life blood into what their passionate about," Sutherland said. "Several of them go on to win the state wide competition and that just brings more businesses back to our community.

These winners usually become very active and strong advocates for other small businesses so it's just a ripple effect that we are seeing going on here."

Thursday's event honors the accomplishments of over seventy local businesses in eleven different categories.

There will also be a lot of non-profit successes that will also be recognized tonight

Over 500 people are expected to attend.
