Taste of Your Town: Carol's Place Restaurant in Forest

Posted: Updated:

Carol's Place sits right beside Forest Road in Forest.  It's been there in one form or another since the 1920's.  But today it specializes in, "Good home southern cooking.  Chicken livers, homemade meatloaf, catfish, breakfast buffet on weekends like Grandma used to make," said owner Rusty Goodwin.

The patrons, some of whom eat here twice a day are more than just, "regulars."

Shirley Almond even has her "own" table.

They do tease me a lot about the fact that I like to read my paper and they call this my office!" said Almond, who estimates she eats at Carol's Place 3-4 times a week.

And Johnny Lester has been coming here he says since he was three – minus a few years he traveled with the rodeo.

"A lot of times I do come in here twice a day – cause I don't cook.  I live about a mile away – so this is good," said Lester:

The walls are dotted with thank you's from Jefferson Forest sports teams – which Rusty Goodwin supports by letting them occasionally take over the business on a nights he would normally be closed.

:They come in, the kids do all the work.  They wait tables bus tables, wash dishes and greet customers. …  the JF volleyball team a couple of weeks ago raised $2,000 in three hours," he said.

The day we were here the special was meatloaf.  Perfect.

Carlin on camera: "So here it is.  We've got fried okra which I love, potatoes, roll – but the star of this plate is the meatloaf.  I'm going to dig in.  Give that a shot.  That is GOOD meatloaf.  Unbelievable."

By the way Carol's Place is only open only one night a week – Friday, perfect for high school football fans.
