Two Gate City HS students charged with planning classmate's murder

SCOTT COUNTY, VA (WJHL) -

Gate City High School and Middle School went into lockdown mode Friday morning because two high school students threatened to kill one another student.

Investigators say they learned of the threat Thursday night so as students and staff arrived Friday morning at school leaders and law enforcement put the school on a soft lockdown.

During a soft lockdown everything within the school continues as normal, however nobody could exit the building. Parents did have an option to come pick their children up from school.

The Scott County Sheriff's Office along with a K-9 unit spent several hours on the scene combing through both Gate City High School and Middle School before lifting the lockdown around 11a.m.

Sheriff John Puckett told News Channel 11 a threat posted on Facebook sparked the investigation, "We did get a confession out of one of the young males saying that a female was wanting to kill a subject here in the school [Gate City High] and he was going to help lure the kid to a set of stairs or something out of the way to where she could shoot him".

Both students a male, age 17 and a female, age 16 are charged with conspiracy to commit first degree murder and are in custody at the Highlands Juvenile Detention Center in Bristol.

A status hearing is set for Monday to determine if the students will remain in custody.
