Oliver Hill House used for Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor program

Posted: Updated:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Virginia has started an after-school mentoring program in honor of Oliver Hill, a Roanoke native who is remembered for his efforts to fight school segregation.

Students from four different Roanoke City Schools come to the Oliver Hill House one day a week for a little extra attention on school work.

Each student is paired with a big brother or big sister to create that friendship.

The Oliver Hill House just opened this school year and leaders say they already see a big difference in one child in particular.

"He's so happy all the time and he loves being here and he can't wait to meet his big brother and we don't know who it is yet, but he just keeps asking me when do I get my big brother," explained Jackie Smith, BBBS Director of Roanoke Valley.

There's a waiting list for littles to be matched with bigs.

Coming up next week, we'll tell you about a new effort from Big Brothers Big Sisters to get more men to sign up to mentor.
