DURHAM, N.C. -

Parents in the Triangle watching their high school football athletes play every Friday night can rest a little easier knowing Duke Medicine offers a clinic specifically for Friday night injuries.

Duke Sports Medicine offers a Friday Night Injury Clinic to better serve the football players from all high schools that are involved in the Sports Medicine Outreach Program.

Kella Kinsey is the mother of a Cary High quarterback and said he's been hurt many times and often worries about her athlete.

"Anything can happen on the field," Kinsey said. "As a parent, you worry every time your kid's on the field that something can happen."

Injuries are all-too-common on the field, which is why Dr. Tracy Ray, medical director with Duke's Friday Night Injury Clinic, started the special program, collaborating with nine other high schools in the Triangle.

"We're going to get you in the right brace, we're going to push for the right therapy, we're going to hook you up with a surgical scheduler and get you in with an orthopedic surgeon," Ray explained.

He said injuries that happen on the field need specialized care an ER doctor wouldn't necessarily be able to provide.

"The overwhelming majority of sports injuries are actually better handled by somebody who is fully trained in orthopedics and in sports medicine," Ray said.

Because the program is so new, not many people know about it yet.
