Three killed, two hurt in Craig Co. accident

Virginia Western Community College Spokesman Josh Meyer says several of the people involved in a fatal accident in Craig Co. had ties to the school.  Megan Bradley, the driver who was killed, is currently enrolled at VWCC. The two other girls who died in the accident were former students at Virginia Western, and one injured girl is a current student there. Meyer says intervention counselor  Sherilyn Meixner is available at  857-6711.

Virginia State Police say they are still investigating the fatal accident that left two New Castle teens and another woman dead and sent two other teens to the hospital.

Troopers say it happened around 11:30 p.m. on Route 311 in Craig County. Investigators says 18-year-old Megan Bradley was heading southbound and attempting to pass another vehicle that was making a left turn when she lost control, ran off the road and hit a tree. Bradley was not wearing a seat belt, State Police say. She died at the scene.

Two passengers were also killed. 22-year-old Carleigh Taylor, died at the scene. 19-year-old Tia Gardner was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital and died a short time later. Two other female passengers in the vehicle, 19-year-old Jessica Stebar and a 16-year-old were both airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for their injuries.

State Police say the driver of second vehicle, 19-year-old Nicholas Fisher and his two passengers were not injured in the crash.


UPDATE: 10:20 a.m.

State police confirm five girls were in vehicle involved in fatal accident on Route 311 in Craig Co. Two died on the scene, one died at Carilion Roanoke Memorial, State Police say. The two others were airlifted. No word on their condition. One of the girls involved is a minor.

Three people in a second vehicle involved were not hurt.


Craig County Superintendent Kelly Wilmore confirms 4 former students and 1 current student were involved in a fatal accident near New Castle overnight. We are waiting for confirmation on the number of deaths and injuries from State Police.

Superintendent Wilmore says the current student involved is a senior.  Grief counselors have already been called in to school.
