Community mourns over three women killed in Craig Co. Car Crash

Posted: Updated:
CRAIG COUNTY -

Hours after three young women were killed in a car crash, visitors put down flowers at the scene creating a makeshift memorial on the side of the road.

A steady flow of people paid their respects including friends like Josh Gunter and Nick Fisher who witnessed the accident.

"I tried to get the door open but I couldn't," says Fisher. "I just busted open the windows out, pulled one of the girls out, then the cops came and I had to get out of the way."

The men called 911 and tried to help the five people in the car before police arrived to the scene.

The driver, 18-year-old Megan Bradley and passengers 22-year-old Carleigh Taylor and 19-year-old Tia Gardner died. Two others were taken to the hospital.

All were former and current students at Craig County High School.

Grief counselors spent the day at the school just in case any students needed someone to talk to. Superintendent Kelly Wilmore told us throughout the morning he got calls from parents and friends showing their support.

"You're talking a lot of young people in the last four years who have just went out of our schools so it's a very tough situation for all of our faculty and our staff," says Wilmore.

The are of New Castle is considered to be a tight knit community and people who didn't know those who died say this tragedy still affects every person here.

"From the schools to the merchants particularly the parents and the churches we're all just devastated and we'll all be for some time," says Jim Cornick, dentist in New Castle.
