Board of Supervisors To Consider Budget for New Police Academy

Posted: Updated:

The Roanoke County Board of Supervisors will consider two separate items related to the construction of a new criminal justice academy tonight.

The expansion has been in the works for over two years. The Roanoke County Police Department currently trains at the Public Safety building, which was not meant to host an academy.

The county plans to build an extension onto Roanoke City's current academy. The two divisions would then share the expanded building and pool their resources.

The building would also be used to train the Roanoke Sheriff's office and Western Virginia Regional Jail employees.

The first item up for discussion is the budget.

Here are the facts on where the funds would come from.

  • The federal government would contribute $2.5 million. This money comes to the county as a result of an asset forfeiture and has to be spent on law enforcement.
  • The City of Roanoke would contribute $250,000. The city's money will go towards the construction of a new parking lot. Roanoke's current academy needs more spaces so the expansion project will meet their needs.
  • Roanoke County would contribute the remaining $300,000. The funds would be taken from a minor capitol project account. Assistant County Administrator Dan O'Donnell says this will add no additional cost to taxpayers.

The board will also review a potential ground lease with the city.

To begin construction, the county needs the city's permission to add on to the existing complex.

The forty year contract would cost the county one dollar per year.

Tonight is the first hearing for each of these items. The second hearing will be held on October 22nd and that's when the board is expected to vote.

According to Assistant Administrator Dan O'Donnell, if both items are approved construction could begin as soon as this winter

The public can review the comprehensive agreement for this project until October 21st. Contact the clerk of the board at djacks@roanokecountyva.gov for more information.
