Fact Check: McAuliffe ad attacks Cuccinelli's record on abortion

Posted: Updated:

As we inch closer toward picking a new governor, we are getting bombarded with more and more political ads.

This new ad from Democrat Terry McAuliffe's campaign focuses on Republican Ken Cuccinelli's record on abortion.

"Ken Cuccinelli sponsored a bill that could have made common forms of birth control illegal, including the pill," the ad's announcer says.

The key word here is could.

In 2007 while serving in the State Senate, Cuccinelli co-sponsored a bill that gave the "guaranteed right to enjoyment of life to pre born human beings from the moment of fertilization".

It failed to pass the House of Delegates.

While the bill likely would have limited abortions in Virginia, nowhere does it say forms of birth control would become illegal.

"Cuccinelli was one of only five state senators to support this potentially radical intrusion into domestic, family, and individual decision making," the announcer says next.

It's true that Cuccinelli co-sponsored the bill with four other state senators, including attorney general candidate Mark Obenshein.'

The quote comes from the Washington Post. Although, it's important to remember that it came from the opinion page of the newspaper and not from a news story.

Cuccinelli also claims as governor he would focus on economic issues, not social ones.
