A Franklin County child advocacy organization is in need of the public's help.

In the last year, leaders at the Southern Virginia Child Advocacy Center says they've taken on 200 more clients. Joyce Moran, the executive director of the center, says they don't have enough volunteers or clinicians.

They also worry the government shutdown will delay grant money getting to the center. They say it's money they desperately need to help the hundreds of kids they serve.

"Every child that walks in has their own unique story," Joyce Moran, executive director." "From witnessing domestic violence to exposure to drugs to exposure to mental health disorder, we see a lot of children that are raising their siblings at 7 years old."

The center helps abused and neglected children in the area through treatment, prevention, and education.

"It is true and it is real and these children need our assistance," Moran says.

However, a local man continues to help the center with the Johnny CSA 5 miler 5K WALK/RUN. This year the run is zombie-theme.

"The more people we can get out to run and support the race and raise awareness for the child advocacy center and increase amount of money for the race the better," race director, Johnny Nolen says.

The race is Saturday, October 12th. It starts at 8:30 a.m. in uptown Rocky Mount. All proceeds will benefit the center.
