Franklin County Sheriff's Department warns against 2 common scams

Posted: Updated:

The Franklin County Sheriff's Department is warning people about two scams they've received multiple calls on in the last few weeks.

The first scam is someone calling and saying you've won $2.5 million and a vehicle. The caller then tells you to buy a green dot card at a convenience store to get the money.

The second is a call many people are getting in the middle of the night. The caller asks for bail money for a family member.

"If you get that type of a call don't engage them in conversation, just hang up the phone because it is a scam," Franklin County Sheriff's Office Captain Mark Torbert says. "The problem is most of these calls are coming from the West Coast, Jamaica, somewhere out of the United States or Virginia, which makes prosecution very difficult almost impossible based on that fact."

The sheriff's department also recently created a forum to educate senior citizens, who are often targets of scams like these.
