Virginia Tech tweetup to focus on social media and elections

Posted: Updated:

Twitter fans will tweet tonight about social media's role in elections.

Virginia Tech students and retirees will play host to a tweetup tonight. If you've never heard the term, it's a way for people who have only met virtually to come together in person and take on a topic. It's likely also one of the few meetings you can attend where you're encouraged to bring your smartphones and tablets and actually tweet during the event using the hashtag #HokiesW2K.

Hokies Want to Know will include a roundtable conversation about how social media has influenced voters and election campaigns.

"Social media has become this interesting player in the campaign process. It's become this interesting way that candidates are able to get their information out there without having to spend a lot of money," said panelist Jenn Mackay. "It's an interesting way to organize volunteers but it also this interesting way for the public to become part of the conversations well. They have this opportunity to ask questions to talk about their own opinions and things try like in a way that we've never heard before."

The Hokies Want to Know tweetup is tonight at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute.

Non-tweeters, users of Facebook or other social media platforms are also invited. Audience members' tweets will be projected on a screen during the roundtable. Twitter users planning to attend should register via Tweetvite.

Top tweeters will win prizes plus there will be food and giveaways for all participants.
