Alleghany County man, Virginia DARE Coordinator sweeps state and national awards

Posted: Updated:

An Alleghany County man, who is the DARE Coordinator for the State of Virginia, has achieved what no one else has.

Gene Ayers has a clean sweep of coveted state and national awards starting with the Virginia State DARE Officer of the Year in 2003, followed by the National DARE Officer of the Year in 2008, a year later the Virginia Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 and recently he's accepted the National Lifetime Achievement Award.

"Growing up in the Triangle area, went to Sharon Elementary and Alleghany High School, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be doing stuff like this.  It's been a blessing from above to do something like this.  It's afforded me the opportunity to travel.  I have pictures all around my house of places I've been," said Ayers.

Ayers has spent years helping train more than 15-hundred dare officers here in the united states.
