New signs for North End in Blacksburg

Posted: Updated:

One are in Blacksburg may soon be going by a new name. Leaders hope to combine the current Collegiate Square and Turner St. Project into one new district, the North End.

"It's the north end of that part of campus, the north end of that part of the town," says Kevin Sullivan, the Associate V.P. Of Administration for Virginia Tech's Foundation. "So everyone would sort of know it. There's no where else in town that people call North End, so we want them to all think of the same spot."

It's a plan that people who work in that area, like Rebecca Bishop, a salon coordinator for Tivon, say they're excited about. She says relabeling the centers could also make it easier for potential customers to find shops like hers.

"It gives us a substantial name to tell our clients. We're on the North End of Blacksburg. So maybe they can Google that and find us a little easier," says Bishop.

The next step in this plan is to get an ordinance for new signs in the area passed by Town Council. Sullivan believes adding the new signage will help make a name for the area and give businesses a boost.

"Retail is at times difficult in Blacksburg, and we want to encourage that," says Sullivan. "Signage is one of those things. We want to get the right kinds of signs that the town is happy with, retailers are happy with and hopefully the consumers are happy with."

It's a decision Blacksburg's Town Council will first consider at their meeting on November 12th.
