SALEM, VA -

Salem Superintendent Alan Seibert is also the president of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents one of the statewide groups pushing for change.

He says the current system of measuring people 34 times over nine years is too much and wants the number reduced to eight or twelve to a tiered system.

The Salem School Board signed a resolution last month calling on the Virginia General Assembly to re-examine Virginia Public School assessments.

Seibert says Salem was one of the first to agree to the resolution and he expects others in the state to follow suit.

"We welcome assement and accountability, it's just time for the system to be overhauled to make it more meaningful for the new century," said Seibert.

Siebert says Salem students do well under the current system but it's a road block to the innovative efforts they have underway to personalize student learning.

The superintendent believes because so many groups are calling for change it will happen but it will have to come from the General Assembly.

Chambers of commerce have also started signing resolutions saying we need to prepare the workforce to be thinkers and doers not test takers.
