Porsche exhibit opens Saturday at NC Museum of Art

RALEIGH, N.C. -

On Saturday, the North Carolina Museum of Art unveils "Porsche by Design: Seducing Speed" as a look at the evolution of the iconic automobile.

The exhibit features 22 cars that trace the evolution of Porsche from its inception in the 1930s to the present day.

The exhibit includes a 1938 Type 64 Berlin-Rom Racer designed by Porsche founder Ferdinand Porsche and includes a Porsche owned by Steve McQueen and a rare Type 804 Formula One race car – one of only four of the model ever built.

"At the NCMA, we are continually looking for ways to engage our audience with exhibitions and installations that help interpret the world around us through the lens of art and design," said Larry Wheeler, director of the museum. "'Porsche by Design' traces the evolution of these magnificent automobiles, but by virtue of putting them in a museum setting, we are challenged to see them in a different way: as objects of beauty that transcend their use for transportation."

The exhibition runs through Jan. 20.
