Roanoke students turn snow plows into canvas for expression

ROANOKE, VA -

It may be a little too soon for some of you to think about snow but some local students are knee deep in discussions.

Students at William Fleming High School are one of a dozen groups of Roanoke students painting snow plows for the Public Works Department. Elementary, middle and high schools took part.

The idea came from a public works trade publication and has practical benefits as well. The city says painting the plows helps them last longer. It also gives art students a way to express themselves and send a message to the public about their school through public art. "We came up with some ideas about how we can create a design where we show people that we are a unified, supportive, loving environment where we have a lot of great kids and great teachers that give back to our community," explained art teacher Heather Marshall.

When it snows, the plows will be assigned to the zone in which they were painted so the students involved and everyone else can see them.

You can see the plows for yourself next week as they will be on display at the Roanoke Civic Center starting Tuesday.
