Posted: Updated:
BLACKSBURG, VA -

Blacksburg Police Chief Kimberley Crannis is retiring, effective March 1, 2014.

Chief Crannis has been with the department for thirty years. She began her law enforcement career with the Blacksburg Police Department in 1984 after she graduated from Ferrum College with a degree in Public Administration. She's served as a Patrol Officer, Detective, Sergeant (Crime Prevention/Community Outreach), Lieutenant (Patrol and Professional Standards) and Captain (Operations Division Commander) prior to her appointment as the Chief of Police in 2006, according to a news release from the Town of Blacksburg..

Crannis is credited with starting the Citizens Police Academy as a part of her Masters work at Virginia Tech, increasing the amount of officers and staff in the police department, adding three K-9 officers, updating the department's technology infrastructure, and collaborating with Virginia Tech, the Town of Christiansburg, and Montgomery County to regionalize the 911 system in 2015.

"I love it here," said Chief Crannis. "But I set my retirement date in the early 90s and am looking forward the next phase of my life, moving to the eastern part of Virginia to work on my golf game and ride my motorcycle."
