BEDFORD, VA -

World War II veterans from the Roanoke and Bedford area are on their way to Washington D.C., to the National World War II memorial.

They are on a bus that started its trip from Tennessee.

The memorial in D.C. is closed to the general public, due to the government shutdown, but is made open to veterans.

Each veteran has a "guardian," who is a volunteer to help them during the trip.

They'll all spend the day Saturday in D.C., and come back Sunday.

For some veterans, the gift was a surprise to them.

"Somebody put my name in the pot to be taken up there," says John Kessler who is a veteran. "I don't know who that was but I'm glad to go with them."
