In the Commonwealth there are more than 62,000 grandparents who are now raising their grandchildren.

It's a trending statistic the Roanoke Valley is seeing too. Much more so than what you might think.

The Prevention Council of Roanoke County says 58 percent of children in the Roanoke Valley are being raised by someone other than their parents.

Quite often that person is the child's grandparents.

The council hosted a seminar just for grandparents Saturday at the YMCA in Salem offering resources and guidance on raising a new generation of children in today's world.

Brooks Michael, a prevention education coordinator for the Prevention Council says there are a lot of issues that children face today that they didn't see twenty years ago.

"There are a lot of changes really for parents to keep up with. with grandparents there is a lot to keep up with technology. It changes every single day. It is just a lot to stay on top of so we did address that today. We also talked a lot about the legal aspects of this, financial reasons they may need help," Michaels said.

If you would like to learn more information about resources available to grandparents, guardians and care givers, visit the councils website.
