A Raleigh man, charged in connection with a string of kidnappings and ATM robberies was in court Monday afternoon to face a judge.

Walter Kevin Johnson, 28, was given a second court date of Nov. 4 at 9 a.m., and will be appointed a public defender. He is being held at the Wake County Detention Center on more than $3 million bond.

He was stopped by Raleigh police on Glenwood Avenue near Pleasant Valley Road around 1:15 p.m. Friday, police said.

An investigation by the Raleigh Police Department, the Wake County Sheriff's Office and the Wake Forest Police Department resulted in arrest warrants being obtained, charging Johnson with 23 offenses.

Johnson is charged with:

  • nine counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon
  • one count of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon
  • three counts of first-degree kidnapping
  • three counts of second-degree kidnapping
  • one count of first-degree burglary
  • one count of possession of stolen property
  • one count of larceny of a firearm
  • two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • one count of extortion
  • one count of larceny of a motor vehicle

Raleigh police said the charges are related to crimes committed on the following dates:

  • Sept. 22 in the 4800 block of Pleasant Valley Road
  • Sept. 22 in the 4300 block of Furman Hall
  • Sept. 24 in the 1000 block of Collins Drive
  • Sept. 25 in the 1400 block of Hopson Downs Court
  • Sept. 26 in the 5000 block of Stonebridge Drive
  • Sept. 27 in the 4900 block of Wynneford Way
  • Oct. 4 in the 2400 block of Chelmsford Drive
  • Oct. 8 in the 6200 block of Ridgefield Street

Law enforcement will continue to investigate the incidents. Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said he expects more charges to be filed against Johnson. He also said there could be more arrests.

Johnson, who is married with kids, was reportedly experiencing financial problems, which investigators are looking at as a possible motive for the robberies.

Recently, he owned an Internet marketing company called 1855 Media, which was headquarted in the Captrust tower in North Hills.

Johnson lives a couple blocks from Pleasant Valley Road, where many of the robberies happened.
