New training on treating gunshot wounds in schools

Posted: Updated:
FRANKLIN COUNTY, VA -

Teachers and staff at Benjamin Franklin Middle School learned what to do if a student is shot.

It's the first time Franklin County Schools and the Rocky Mount Police Department have teamed up for a life-saving training session.

They used a slab of meat to practice finding the bullet, applying pressure, and then stopping the bleeding.

"I wouldn't want someone to bleed out or die when they didn't have to because of minimal amount of training and equipment we couldn't provide," School Resource Officer, T.J. Robertson says.

It's a very real situation that T.J. Robertson, the school resource officer for Benjamin Franklin Middle School, says all school leaders should know how handle.

Robertson says the 'Active Shooter Training' teachers get is helpful, but he wants to take it a step further with 'Trauma Care Training.'

Principal Brenda Muse says it's training she hopes her staff will never have to use, but is thankful the Rocky Mount Police Department is working with the school to provide.  Every trained teacher will now have a trauma kit in the classroom.

"There's no way to avoid it. It used to be our sole focus was on academics, but now we have to put safety first. That is the number one focus," principal Brenda Muse says. "I want to ensure we do everything in our power to train staff in the event of a crisis."

Rocky Mount Police Chief David Cundiff says any school that would like the trauma care training can call the police department.
