President Obama will award Former U.S. Army Captain William Swenson with the Medal of Honor for courageous actions taken while serving in Afghanistan. He'll be awarded during a ceremony at the White House.

Virginia's Fall Fire Season begins today. Recent wet weather helped lower the threat but the Virginia Department of Forestry reminds you this is typically the time of year when conditions are ripe for them to ignite.

Today is the deadline to apply to register to vote in the November 5, 2013 election. You can register at any DMV, local registrar's office or online at the State Board of Elections website.

Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling will deliver the keynote address at the 2013 Regional Leaders Summit luncheon in Wytheville today. It's taking place at noon at the Wytheville Meeting Center.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning to increase the Jackson River's water flow with a controlled dam release this morning at 6 a.m.. The release from the Gathright Dam near Covington is part of a study to determine whether controlled releases effectively remove algae and improve water quality in the lower Jackson River.

Liberty University's School of Education will host a Superintendent's Luncheon at the Barrick-Falwell Lodge at Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre at noon today. Area superintendents will be honored for their cooperation in making mentoring opportunities available for Liberty's student teacher candidates.

Tonight at 6:00, there will be a community meeting about revitalizing the west side of Martinsville through the city's Community Development office. The meeting will be held at Albert Harris Elementary.
