Roanoke Go Outside Fest kicks off Friday

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE -

This weekend you can experience everything the outdoors have to offer, all in the confines of the city.

The annual Roanoke Go Outside Festival kicks off Friday at River's Edge Sports Complex.

Organizers say the purpose of the event is to make local people and visitors aware of all the outdoor opportunities in the Roanoke Valley.

"The outdoor amenities in this area is one our greatest assets," said Pete Eshelman, one of the organizers. "So we've been working hard to make that part of our community culture and to make that part if our community narrative."

The three day event brings together local guides, outfitters, and other experts who will give demos on everything from paddle boarding to fly fishing and camping.

For those who are more interested in watching than doing, there will be a number of special events like a BMX stunt show, an extreme sports film festival, and concerts.

For those who don't mind getting their feet wet, there will also be lots of interactive activities -- like a tiny bike obstacle course, a dog jumping contest, and a free-fall jump onto a big air bag.

The entire festival is free.

"We really didn't want cost to be a barrier to entry," said Eshelman. "We want everybody to be able to come down here, try out new gear, participate in some fun events, do competitive races, see some pro athletes, and listen to music."

Go Outside Fest runs from 5:00pm - 10:00pm Friday, 10:00am - 10:00pm on Saturday, and 10:00am - 5:00pm on Sunday.
