Local girl battles disease, and fights for other children

Posted: Updated:

Cheerleader Sierra Day organized a purple out on the squad for her younger sister Savannah who's preparing for her 14th brain surgery after being diagnosed with a rare brain disease.

While the Days were all together Friday night,  frequent doctor visits make family time a rarity.

"It's almost like having half your family missing during this time so it is hard on our family," James Day said.

Savannah and her family will be spending this Christmas at the Cincinnati hospital as she recovers from surgery but that's the last thing on her mind. Friday night she and her sisters held a toy drive for other children that will be at the hospital over the holiday.

"I hope they get a Christmas because they weren't going to get a Christmas before," Savannah said.

Savannahs parents tell us the non-profit hospital will house five hundred children --most from poor backgrounds --so despite her illness, Savannah is determined to spread the holiday cheer to many whom have never had it before.

"She's put herself second to put the kids in Cincinnati ahead of herself to make sure that they have a good Christmas even though she is the one having the surgery she has put this together to make sure they have a bright holiday and its just made us so proud of what she has tried to accomplish so far," James said.

Her spirit is contagious. Friday night they loaded up over one hundred toys --and WSLS even helped out the cause.

"This is the car I want in real life."

From purple ribbons to boxes of toys Savannah has received a lot of love from the community.

"It means a lot that my community is supporting me through all of the hard times," Savannah said.

But in the end - Savannah is supporting so many more.
